How to make sure you stay up past your bedtime

I’m officially past the stage where I can blame my children for my own lack of sleep. Nope. It’s all my fault, a fact that becomes painfully clear every morning when my alarm rings.

Here are nine ways that you too can stay up past your bedtime and hate yourself in the morning:

1. Read one more chapter.

The clock is telling me it’s time to start thinking about going to bed, but this chapter is short. No big deal.

2. Watch one more show.

Netflix only gave me six seconds to decide, and it ended on a cliffhanger anyway.

3. Do one more chore.

I’m heading upstairs to bed now, but let me just do these couple of dishes real quick. Oh, and I’ll just slap together a sandwich for my kid’s lunch box tomorrow since I’m already in the kitchen.

4. Eat one more snack.

I just put my kid’s lunch back in the refrigerator when I remember there are still Thin Mints in the freezer. Let me grab a couple on my way to bed.

5. Have one more conversation.

I’m brushing my teeth but I suddenly remember that I have something really urgent I forgot to tell my husband before. And also I need to discuss where I want my career to be in five years. It’ll just take a sec.

6. One more check on the kids.

My oldest needs a blanket, clearly, and I need to watch my youngest for a little bit to see if there are any traces of his chubby baby cheeks left. Don’t rush me, this is important.

7. One more Instagram story.

I’m in bed now, I did it! Let me just make sure my morning alarm is set on my phone. Oh and since my phone is out, I’m going to watch one more Instagram story. And a quick scroll, but that’s it.

8. Leave one more comment.

It’s a pregnancy announcement, it would be rude not to!

9. Think about all the things.

Uh oh, it’s really late now. I turn off the light, but not my brain. I need to think about all the things I didn’t get done today, and make a mental to-do list of everything I need to do tomorrow.

Your turn!

What would you add to the list? What keeps you up past your bedtime?

  1. I end up mindlessly scrolling on Facebook and then get to bed later than I wanted and then end up reading for the same hour even though now it is way past my bedtime! I relate to this post SO MUCH!!!!

  2. Last night for me it was: Let me post a few more tweets to see if anyone else will download our free books since we are at 13 downloads right now, yikes! We need to get past 13. This morning I discovered the tweets must have worked. There were 15 downloads in all for yesterday.

  3. Sarah, you are delightful. I have to say, though, the chubby cheeks are worth a few more minutes. Also, the five year plan … lol! Thank you for this witty and poignant piece of writing.
